The Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program offers households a significant upfront discount on solar battery installation — currently around 30% off the cost. The rebate works through Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), which your installer applies directly to your invoice so you never have to claim it yourself.
From 1 May 2026, the way the rebate is calculated changes. The per-kWh rate drops, and for batteries larger than 14 kWh, a tiered structure kicks in — meaning the portion of your battery above 14 kWh attracts a reduced rebate rate. The larger the battery, the bigger the impact.
For a typical 10 kWh battery, the difference is modest. But for whole-home backup systems in the 20–30 kWh range, installing before 1 May could mean $1,500–$2,500 more in rebate value.
The program runs until 2030, with the rebate stepping down every six months from May — so there’s no urgency to rush beyond the 1 May deadline, but waiting does cost money over time.
