Smoke Alarm Placement: Most QLD Homes Get This Wrong (And 2027 Makes It Law)

Ask most homeowners where their smoke alarms are, and you’ll usually get a shrug. “One in the hallway, I think?” is the most common answer we hear — and it’s exactly the kind of setup that’s about to become non-compliant.

Terms and Conditions

These terms explain how we work together — what you can expect from us, and what we need from you. We’ve tried to keep this in plain English rather than legal jargon. If anything’s unclear, just ask us.

  1. Our Guarantee to You
  • Our work is carried out by fully qualified tradespeople, safely and courteously.
  • We’re fully insured, including $20M in Public Liability cover, and we’ve been proud Members of the Master Electricians for over 16 years.
  • All our workmanship is guaranteed for 12 months.
  • Products and spare parts come with the manufacturer’s own warranty. A couple of things to keep in mind:
    ◦ That warranty is voided if the part is installed by someone who isn’t a qualified technician.
    ◦ If a part fails under warranty, the labour to replace it may not be covered — this depends on the individual manufacturer’s terms.
  • When we’re diagnosing a fault (especially with appliances), it’s not always possible to spot every issue upfront. Sometimes fixing the first problem reveals another one, which may mean extra parts or labour beyond our original diagnosis.
  1. Payment Terms
  • Deposit: For quoted works, we ask for a deposit of 50% of the quoted job cost before we start work, unless we’ve agreed otherwise with you in writing.
  • Outside of that deposit, our standard payment terms are 7 days from invoice, unless we’ve agreed something different with you in writing beforehand.
  • If payment isn’t made by the due date, interest may apply, to the extent the law allows.
  • If we need to use a debt collector to recover an unpaid amount, any reasonable costs of doing so will be passed on to you.
  • For quoted work, or work being billed on a time and materials basis, we may ask for full or partial payment upfront.
  • If you book an appliance or air conditioning service online, payment is required at the time of booking.
  • Any goods or materials we supply remain our property until they’re paid for in full.
  1. Pricing
  • If your job is being charged on a time and materials basis, please make sure you understand our hourly rates before work begins — we’re always happy to explain them.
  • We can’t offer refunds or adjustments on the basis that you weren’t aware of the hourly rate, so please ask upfront if you’re unsure.
  • Time and materials charges cover the whole time we’re on site — this includes paperwork and cleaning up afterwards.
  • For appliance repair estimates, we may ask for payment before we order parts or carry out the work.
  • Quotes and estimates are valid for 30 days.
  • Unless we’ve said otherwise, our quotes don’t include:
    ◦ Paint or plaster repairs
    ◦ Changes to existing cabinetry, fixtures, or fittings
    ◦ Any extra work you ask us to do that wasn’t part of the original quote — this will be charged at our standard time and materials rate.
  • Some services have seasonal pricing. Check our service information page for current rates and
    details.
  1. Limitation of Liability
  • To the extent the law allows, we’re not liable for any indirect or flow-on losses — for example, loss of profit, damage to your reputation, or lost data.
  • If something does go wrong, our liability is limited to the amount you paid for the relevant
    product or service.
  • We take every reasonable precaution with our work, but we can’t be held responsible for
unforeseen issues that arise from digging, trenching, or drilling through walls.
  • If unexpected damage happens to existing services (like electrical or water lines) while we’re
doing this kind of work, the cost of fixing it will be your responsibility, or the responsibility of
whoever asked us to do the work.
  1. Making Space for Our Team to Work
  • Please make sure our team has clear access to the work area — it helps if furniture or items near the work site are moved out of the way before we arrive.
  • If access is blocked, we may not be able to complete the job.
  • If we do need to move things ourselves to get to the work area, we’ll take care, but we can’t take responsibility for any damage that happens as a result.
  1. Air Conditioner Servicing
  • Cleaning a dirty air conditioner can sometimes create a bit of mess nearby. We do our best to keep this to a minimum, but we can’t take responsibility for it.
  • See Section 5 above about clearing access to the work area.
  1. Moving Appliances
  • If we need to move or uninstall an appliance to diagnose or fix a problem, we’ll handle it carefully and safely. That said, minor scratches or scuff marks can sometimes happen and are unfortunately unavoidable in some cases — we can’t take responsibility for this. If you’re concerned about this, we’d recommend arranging a removalist in advance.
  • See Section 5 above about clearing access to the work area.
  1. Returns and Refunds
  • We can’t accept returns on electrical circuit boards once the packaging has been opened.
  • If we’ve ordered parts on your behalf that turn out not to be needed, a 50% restocking fee plus any freight costs will apply.
  • Work carried out in our workshop is covered by our workshop warranty only.
  1. Cancellations
  • If you need to cancel or reschedule, please give us at least 12 hours’ notice. Cancellations made with less notice than this may incur a minimum call-out charge.

If you have any questions about these terms, please get in touch — we’re happy to talk it through.
