If you’re thinking about adding a battery to your home or business, now is an excellent time to act. The federal government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program has been making battery storage more affordable across the Sunshine Coast since it launched on 1 July 2025, and it remains open to new applications today.

What is the Battery Subsidy?
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program provides an approximately 30% discount on the upfront cost of eligible battery systems, delivered through Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) — the same mechanism used for the solar panel rebate. It is not means-tested and is available to:
- Households
- Businesses
- Community facilities such as sports clubs, halls and community centres
Eligible battery systems must sit between 5kWh and 100kWh in nominal capacity, and must be installed by an accredited battery installer connected to new or existing rooftop solar. This makes it easier for more Sunshine Coast households and businesses to store solar energy, reduce reliance on the grid, and cut power bills.
Andrew and his team at Noosa Electric Co installed 46 solar panels and a 20Kw battery in our property. Andrew went beyond expectations in finding the right path that would suit our needs. He offered many options and was patient in providing alternative quotes and options. The result is spectacular. We are now not only practically off-grid but also able to contribute our excess power to the needs of the neighbourhood. Totally delighted with the results.
Since launching, the program has proven enormously popular, with the government recently expanding total funding from an original $2.3 billion to an estimated $7.2 billion through to 2030 to keep pace with demand.
As of 1 May 2026, the way the discount is calculated has changed: the rebate now steps down every six months (rather than annually) to reflect falling battery prices over time, and larger battery systems receive a proportionally smaller discount per kWh above 14kWh. This makes timing and correct sizing more important than ever when planning your home battery installation. You can read more in our article on the latest federal battery rebate changes.

What is the right size battery for my home?
Every property is different, and the right battery depends on how and when you use electricity. Recent research from the Smart Energy Council shows that most households need a smaller battery than they expect. To avoid drawing power during the expensive evening peak:
- Over 90% of households could manage comfortably with a 6–7kWh battery
- Many popular battery systems on the market are around 13kWh, often more capacity than required
A correctly sized battery can deliver excellent savings without unnecessary upfront cost — and under the current tapered rebate structure, right-sizing your system also helps you make the most of the available discount. If you’re unsure what size is right for your home or business, our experienced Sunshine Coast battery electrician team can assess your usage and recommend a solution that genuinely makes sense for you. Learn more about how a well-sized battery helps you store more and save more while staying in control of your energy use.

How do I get the subsidy?
When you purchase your battery through Noosa Electric Co., the subsidy is applied directly to your quote, so you’ll see the reduced price upfront. As your local Noosa electrician, we handle the STC process for you, making it simple and hassle-free — no separate paperwork or waiting for a rebate cheque.

When can I get a subsidised battery?
Yes. Subsidised battery installations have been running since 1 July 2025, and the program remains active and funded through to 2030. However, because the discount reduces every six months and tapers further for larger systems, the value available today may not be the same in six or twelve months’ time. We recommend registering your interest early to lock in the best available rate for your home battery.
What brand of batteries do you install?
We only install quality, proven battery brands that are:
- Designed for Australian conditions
- Reliable and safe
- Compatible with your existing solar and electrical systems
The best battery depends on your energy goals, property layout and future plans, such as EV charging. Our team will talk you through the options and help you choose the most suitable brand and model for your home battery installation.
